Sometimes we need a big event to happen to shift our way of thinking, to alter our paradigm. We get stuck in a certain way of thinking, or responding and only a large bump will alter the path.
Take for example, two battleships assigned to the training squadron had been at sea on manoeuvres in heavy weather for several days.
While serving on the lead battleship, the captain was on watch on the bridge, when night fell the viability was poor, with patchy fog.
The captain remained on the bridge, keeping an eye on all activities. Shortly after dark, the look out on the wing of the bridge reported “Light, bearing on the starboard bow.”

“Is it steady or moving astern?” the captain called out.
Look out replied, “Steady, captain” which meant they were on a dangerous collision course with the ship.
The captain then called the signal man, “Signal that ship: we are on a collision course, advise them to change course 20 degrees.”
Back came a signal, “Advisable for you to change course 20 degrees.”
The captain said, “Send, I’m a captain, change course 20 degrees.”
“I’m a seaman second class” came the reply. “You had better change course 20 degrees”
By that time, the captain was furious. He spat out, “Send, I’m a battleship. Change course 20 degrees.”
Back came the flashing light, “I’m a lighthouse.”
The ship changed course.
While this is an extreme example, its shows that we have the decision to change our course at will, but ultimately our preconditioning can make us stubborn to change. This is a great example of how something significant can force us to alter our course.
The biggest paradigm shift I see people need help with the most is the necessary action required to bring success in their life and business. Most do just enough, or what’s considered as society as acceptable.
But here’s where the problem starts, when little or mediocre action is taken the results are little, if any. This then creates the belief that what you’re doing doesn’t work, and puts you on the collision course like the ship.
Usually the only way to snap out of this mindset is with a huge event taking place, unfortunately we live in a world where we need proof before we believe something to be true. However if we can get that unshakable certainty, the action we take would be huge, and the results would be brilliant.
Don’t wait for the flashing signal from the lighthouse to change your course, don’t wait for the proof, create it!
